Q:  I have been out of work for 18 months due to a work related injury. I have now been told by my doctors that my illnesses not related to the injury, have caused me to have a permanent disability. My employer is now terminating my health benefits and I have to pick up COBRA until my SS Disability comes through. Does my employer still have to cover the work related injury? Can I opt for another health plan under my employers benefit packages that may be cheaper for me?

A:  COBRA is going to be a continuation of the same group health plan that you were on the day before your insurance was terminated. If you need to make changes to your plan you may need to make those changes at re-enrollment time. Check with your Human Resource manager for specific details. You will be sent an election form in the mail when your coverage has been terminated. At that time you can choose your coverage, such as dental, vision and if you want to make beneficiary changes. Worker's compensation is an alternative coverage to COBRA. If you are coming off of worker's compensation, the employer has to notify you of your COBRA rights with in 44 days from the end of the alternative coverage.
