Q: My employer said that I could not get cobra because our insurance was not the right kind for cobra. That is was incidental. Is this true?

A:  If your previous employer has more than 20 employees and you were on the group health insurance before you left, you are eligible for COBRA continuation.  Your employer is legally responsible for sending you the COBRA packet within 45 days from your last day of work or the last day of your group benefits. You should contact the US Department of Labor at 1-866-487-2365 if your employer is not offering COBRA and they have more than 20 employees.
