Q:  I will be taking a severance package.  I was told that if I plan to sign up for COBRA that it will not start until 3 weeks after my final day of employment. Once that COBRA begins they will reimburse you for any medical expense that happens in the 3 week period.

A:  As soon as you sign up for COBRA, you will be covered retro actively back to your last day of group benefits.  This means there will be no lapse or gap in coverage.  Any claims that occur during your election period will be paid by the insurance company based on the benefits you had prior to the qualifying event.
