Q: If I become eligible for COBRA at age 60 it says on this website that I can maintain my Cobra insurance until age 65. How is this done? Do I need to re-apply after 18 months? I did not see anything on the COBRA website about this although I have heard of it.
A: You will not be able to keep COBRA from age 60 to age 65. There is a maximum amount of time that an employee, their spouse and dependents can be on COBRA. Your age is not a factor for eligibility and your age at the time of the qualifying event does not allow you to keep COBRA coverage until you receive Medicare benefits at age 65. The maximum amount of time that an employee can keep COBRA continuation is 18 months from their last day of work or last day of group benefits.
Certain circumstances may allow for extension - If the beneficiary becomes disabled they may be eligible for an additional 9 months for a total of 29 months. If the employee dies or a divorce occurs, their spouse and dependent children can be on COBRA up to a maximum of 36 months.
