Q: Is it true that a spouse over the age of 60 can continue Cobra coverage up to age 65 if the spouse retires and is no longer insured on the company medical plan?  I have heard this referred to as "Senior Cobra". When my husband retires in a few years he will be 68 and I will be 60. He will be eligible for Medicare but I won't be.

A: An employee, their spouse & dependent children can have COBRA a maximum of 18 months. But when the employee becomes entitled to Medicare & retires (at the same time) the law allows the spouse & children to keep COBRA for up to 36 months. The maximum time anyone can have COBRA continuation is 36 months.  There is no "Senior COBRA" that allows the spouse to keep the COBRA coverage until they become eligible for Medicare.
