Q: I was laid off from a small company that does not offer Cobra. I am 8 months pregnant. My new insurance is supposed to kick in 7 days before my scheduled c-section. I need coverage for the month before. What do I do? What are my best options?
A: If an employer has more than 20 employees they are subject to federal COBRA and must provide you with continuation of their group plan. If your employer has less than 20 employees your state may have a mini-COBRA available. You can contact your state’s department of insurance at www.naic.orgfor information about eligibility requirements.Your state may have other programs that you may qualify forif they don’t offer a mini-COBRA.
