Q: My current boss is selling his practice and the new employer wants to purchase cobra for me, how long can I purchase cobra for?
A: If the employer has more than 20 employees they MUST allow you to continue their group benefits when a qualifying event occurs. You can keep COBRA for up to 18 months.
Employers with less than 20 employees are not subject to COBRA law. They have no “rules” that they must follow when offering continuation of their group health plan.As long as the group health insurance company allows the continuation, the small employer can choose their own time limit to offer continuation of their benefits.
