Q: I was curious if I would have to carry the insurance for any length of time before the maternity coverage was active or able to use.

A: COBRA is not an insurance company, it is a federal law.  An employer with more than 20 employees must provide you with continuation of their group plan.  It is the same benefits, same coverages you had before the COBRA qualifying event.  What ever benefits your employer’s plan has now for pregnancy and maternity, they will continue when you elect COBRA. Your HR department can tell you what benefits the plan providers or you can call the phone number on your insurance ID card for benefit information.
