COBRA Defined: If you leave your job, or are fired from your position, you are entitled, under federal law, to continue receiving your health benefits. Under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), employers with 20 or more employees must give departing employees the option of continuing their health coverage at the worker's own expense (plus an administrative fee) for up to 18 months – including family coverage. Your employer is required to give you COBRA benefits paperwork when you leave your position.
