Message: I am contemplating changing jobs. I have my family and myself on the companies insurance. My new insurance will not start for 90 days. I plan on starting this new job on Dec. 1 and my wife will be having her baby on Dec. 28. I am assuming that my insurance will expire on my termination date. First, do we qualify for COBRA? Second will the pregnancy be covered? And third how do I calculate what the COBRA payments will be?

Message: 1st: Find out from your current employer when the coverage will end if you leave. Some employers will cover their employee's until the end of the month in which they leave the company in, some will cover for an extra 30 days, and some will drop the coverage as of your last day worked.
2nd: If your coverage is dropped on 12/1 then you should be eligible for COBRA. If you are eligible for COBRA then the coverage will continue with no break once you make an election and timely pay for the premiums. No changes in the coverage can take place, and thus if your plan would cover the pregnancy while you were an active employee thus must also cover the same claims as a COBRA Participant.
3rd: to get an estimated $ amount each month, use the cost you pay, and the cost your employer pays for you, and multiply that total number by 1.02. This should give you an approximate amount per month.

Message:
If your company has 20 or more full-time employees and is not a federal government organization nor a church-related organization, then you should be eligible for COBRA continuation.
If under 20 employees with the same criteria as above, your state may have a mini-COBRA program for small employers 2-19 employees.
You can get a list of states with mini-COBRA plans at www.davefluker.com/mini_cobra.html

Message: If my baby is born before my cobra expires, does it count as a qualifying event, so that an extension must be offered to the infant? My company said it will offer a conversion plan to me at the end of my 18 months, but that it would of course be at a higher cost and lower benefits. I am trying to secure the best possible coverage for my baby. Thank you.
