What If I Have To Go To The Doctor Before COBRA Starts?
I retired 4 days ago and the company I worked for said that I will receive COBRA enrollment information from the insurance company in about 10 days. If I needed to go to the doctor prior to enrollment completion am I going to be covered by insurance? I am concerned that if my health failed I might not have insurance.
As soon as your enrollment into COBRA is complete and you pay your first COBRA premium, your plan is retroactive back to the date of the loss of coverage. This means a visit will be covered.
You may pay out of pocket and file a claim for reimbursement or work with your provider’s billing department to run the claim once your COBRA plan is in effect.
COBRA Can Fill The Insurance Gap Until Medicare
If you retire before the age of 65, the COBRA act ensures that you are able to continue your current employer’s group health plan for up to 18 months. This will give you the most comprehensive care until Medicare kicks in. When you elect to stay on your former employer’s health insurance, you pay the full premium, plus a 2% administration fee.
